Smith, Guadalupe "Lupe"
Guadalupe “Lupe” Smith, 85, of Monmouth died at 10:10 A.M. Saturday, February 21, 2009 at her home.
She was born August 31, 1923 in Monmouth the daughter of Benjamin and Refugio (Gutierrez) Almaguer. She was raised and educated in Monmouth attending Immaculate Conception School, Monmouth High School and the Mary Thompson School of Nursing in Chicago, which was an affiliate of Cook County Hospital.
Lupe married Harry D. Smith on March 3, 1945 at Immaculate Conception Church in Monmouth and he died July 14, 2008.
Lupe worked as a registered nurse in Chicago, Watsonville CA. and Monmouth and as a private nurse at Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago and in Monmouth. She loved to travel to foreign countries with Harry. She also enjoyed gourmet cooking and dancing.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, Community Medical Center Auxiliary and the Monmouth Country Club. She was on the Board of Directors for the YMCA, the Warren County Housing Authority, Community Memorial Hospital and Methodist Hospital. At Immaculate Conception Church she was a Pastoral Care Minister and Lector. She also was a member of a local Gourmet Club. Lupe was the 2003 recipient of the Pere Marquette Award for the Diocese or Peoria.
Survivors include her two daughters, Rosa Maria (Peter) Stein of Golden Valley, MN and Sylvia Anne (Robb) Miller of Springfield, IL., one son, Lawrence (Twila) Smith of Jacksonville, FL., three grandsons, Jeffrey Stein, Erik Lyons and Larry Smith, two granddaughters, Tzivia Leviton and Susan Dickerson, 12 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, Rudolph, Louis and Ben Almaguer and two sisters, Mary Louise Posten and Rosita Bray
Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. Friday, February 27, 2009 at Immaculate Conception Church, Monmouth with Fr. Brian Herlocker celebrating. Cremation will take place following the mass. Friends may call Thursday, February 26, 2009 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth where her family will be present from 6:00-8:00 P.M. A Wake service will begin at 5:30 P.M. Memorials may be given to Immaculate Conception School
