Brock, W. Edward "Hoop"
W. Edward “Hoop” Brock. 95, formerly of Monmouth and Oquawka, died Thursday morning, June 11, 2009 at the Chula Vista Care Center, Mesa, Arizona.
He was born January 2, 1914 at Belmont, Henderson County, IL, at the home of his parents Wilson G. and Amanda Jane (Walters) Brock. He was raised and educated in the Belmont area, attending Belmont Grade School and graduating from Seaton High School in 1933 where he played basketball.
Hoop married Helen Louise Thomas on April 15, 1937 in Monmouth and they had 55 years together before she went home to be with the Lord on November 27, 1992.
In his early life he was a farm hand and had worked at Monmouth Stone Company. He retired after 30 years in 1978 from the Local 649 Labor Union of Peoria.
He was a member of the First Christian Church, Monmouth and the Monmouth I.O.O.F. Lodge #61.
Hoop enjoyed family gathering and his grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He also was a lover of the outdoors, hunting, fishing and boating. His sports to watch were basketball, football and baseball. In the 1950’s he coached basketball for the Little League at the old YMCA. He enjoyed telling stories of the past and always had a joke and a smile for you. He will be greatly missed by all.
His family includes, two daughters, Dorothy (Linus) Thornton of Monmouth and Carol Ann (David) Pulver of Leesburg, VA,; one son, John T. (Dovie Tipton) Brock of Casa Grande, AZ.; 8 Grandchildren, Robin Thornton-Cooper of Galveston, IN., John M. Brock of Casa Grande, AZ., Susan (DuWayne) Hale of Pittsurg, KS., Cathy (Jim) Charney of AZ., Amanda Pulver, Trent Pulver, Brock Pulver, Cynthia (Mark) Breglio all of Leesburg, VA.; great grand children, Douglas Thornton of Monmouth, Mariah Thornton of Chillicothe, IL., Jaylene Cooper and Shane Cooper of Galveston, IN, Thomas R. Brock, Jonathon Brock of Abingdon, Jennifer (Brent) Stewart of Litchfield, IN., Ashly Hall of Macomb, IL, Garrett Charney, Cody Charney and Kaitlynn Charney all of AZ.; great great grandchildren, Jace and Dwayne Stewart of Litchfield, IL, Isabella and Sebastian Breglio of Leesburg, VA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wife, Grandson Roderick Thornton, Daughter-in-law, Beverly (Corky) Taylor Brock 8 sisters and 4 brothers.
Funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 18, 2009 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth with Rev James Epperson officiating. Burial will be in Warren County Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel where his family will be present 6:00-8:00 P.M. with an Odd Fellows service beginning at 6:00 P.M.
