Moore, Lawrence "Pete"
Lawrence Lewis “Pete” Moore,88, of Alexis died 4:15 PM Thursday, August 20, 2009 at the Knox County Nursing Home, Knoxville.
He was born January 1, 1921 in Little York, Illinois the son of Clyde E. and Edna (Azdell) Moore. He was reared and educated in Alexis graduating from Alexis High School in 1939.
Pete married Barbara Frye in Alexis on April 15, 1944 and she died October 15, 1999.
Pete was a mechanic from 1945-1966 of Haynes and Azdell Automobile and Oliver Farm Tractor in Alexis. He later worked as a lineman for the Alexis Telephone Company and later GTE from 1966 until he retired in 1986. He loved fishing and boating.
Pete served with the United States Air Force during World War II from 1941-1945. He was a Ball Turret Gunner where he flew 25 missions over Europe and 20 missions over the Pacific. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and 2 Air Medals.
He was a member of the Alexis United Presbyterian Church, James Harvey Scott American Legion Post #189 in Alexis, Monmouth VFW Post #2301 and the he was a volunteer with the Alexis Fire Department for 50 years.
Surviving are his 2 sons, Curtis (Jane) Moore of Alexis and Tom Moore of Alexis; 2 grandchildren, Jamie (Stacy) Moore of Clearwater, FL and Sara (Travis) Moore of Knoxville; 1 great grandson, Lance Moore of Knoxville; 1 great granddaughter, Jordan Moore of Knoxville; 3 brothers, Howard B. “Bus” (Martha) Moore of Alexis, Jack Moore of Moline and Dick (Donna) Moore of Alexis; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 2 brothers Robert H Moore and Donald Moore.
Friends may call after 3:00 PM on Tuesday, August 25th at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Alexis where his family will be present from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Cremation is to take place after the visitation and committal services will military honors provided by the James Harvey Scott American Legion Post #189 will be 1:30 PM on Thursday, August 27th in Alexis Cemetery.
