Richard F. "Dick" McVey
Richard “Dick” McVey, 85, of Delray Beach, FL. Formerly of Monmouth died 9:00 P.M. Friday, January 22, 2010 Boynton Beach, FL.
He was born May 11, 1924 in Monmouth, IL the son of Richard Wright and Margaret (Foster) McVey. He was raised and educated in Monmouth, graduating from Monmouth High School and attended Monmouth College.
Dick served with the United States Army Air Corps as a 1st. Lieutenant. He flew as a pilot for the B-52 Marin Marauders for 54 missions in France and Holland. On his second mission he was wounded and was awarded the Purple Heart.
Dick was the President of the Model Clothing Company in Monmouth from 1955-1994. He was elected to the board of Directors of the National Bank of Monmouth where he served for 26 years. He served as President of the Chamber of Commerce for Warren County Prime Beef Festival. He also served on the organizational committee for Community Memorial hospital and Warren Achievement Inc. which is dedicated to helping handicapped children and adults. He was a member of the Masons, Shriners, Monmouth American Legion, Monmouth VFW and Rotary Clubs.
Survivors include his wife, Lorraine “Muff” McVey of Delray Beach, FL, his children, Sally McVey of Monmouth, Deborah DeForest of Galesburg, Barbara Powell of Tulare, CA, James Benbow of Iron Mountain, MI, Steve Benbow and Brian Benbow both of Galesburg; his brothers, Robert (JoAnn) McVey of Alexis and James McVey of CA; nieces and nephews, Steve (Lynn) McVey, Mark (Julie) McVey, Cinda (Bruce) Burgland and Dana Papineau all of Monmouth.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Richard F. McVey and one daughter, Susie McVey Pitz.
A visitation and memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be given to Warren Achievement Center and left at Hoover-Hall Memorial Chapel, Monmouth who is in charge of the arrangements.Online condolences may left at hooverhall.com.
